This morning, Professor Rami Vainio from the University of Turku gave us a comprehensive talk on particle transport in turbulent plasmas. He set the scene by presenting the structure of coronal and heliospheric magnetic fields, then went on to discuss the principles of charged particle motion in homogeneous magnetic fields.

Further on, the statistical approach was presented, with the kinetic equation for energetic particles. Physical processes influencing particle transport along magnetic field lines were presented, such as diffusion and adiabatic effects.

The equations presented in the lecture were applied in the afternoon by Master’s students in a “hands-on” session.
