High-Energy Particles in the Heliosphere

2025-12-19

In May 2025, the University of Turku hosted the intensive Master’s-level course High-energy Particles in the Heliosphere as part of the Horizon Europe SPEARHEAD project, bringing together students from across Europe both on-site and online. Over four weeks, participants explored how energetic particles are generated, transported, and observed in the heliosphere through lectures, hands-on exercises, and simulation work led by researchers from the SPEARHEAD consortium. The course covered topics such as particle acceleration at the Sun, space- and ground-based detection techniques, cosmic ray modulation, and probabilistic solar energetic particle forecasting, offering students direct engagement with leading scientists and state-of-the-art research tools. Today, the full course material—including lectures and exercises—has been released in open access through Zenodo and is freely available for everyone to use.
