Following four intensive days of lectures, hands-on training and scientific exchange during the SPEARHEAD School, yesterday, 9 September 2026, marked the beginning of SPEARHEAD Workshop #3 at Kiel University, Germany.
Over the following three days, members of the SPEARHEAD consortium, invited experts, early-career researchers and participants from the wider heliophysics and space-weather community will come together to present and discuss the scientific results and tools developed within the project, while exploring their broader applications and future directions.
The first day put SPEARHEAD’s scientific results at centre stage. The programme covered high-energy solar energetic particle observations and data products, including the SPEARHEAD SOHO/ERNE >100 MeV SEP catalogue, as well as new applications of machine learning and explainable AI. The discussions then extended to X-ray observations, energetic-electron catalogues and transport, multi-instrument SEP measurements, and tools developed for characterising the radiation environment.
A central aim of the Workshop is to connect the individual results of SPEARHEAD into a broader picture: from the calibration and exploitation of long-term particle measurements to new event catalogues, analysis tools and studies of particle acceleration and transport. Each scientific block combines invited perspectives, SPEARHEAD impact contributions, shorter presentations and dedicated discussion time, encouraging exchange between the project and the wider community.
Day 1 programme concluded with a public talk by Alexander Warmuth and a fair of tools from SPEARHEAD and the sister EU project SOLER, providing participants with an opportunity to explore the resources developed by the two projects and discuss their scientific applications directly with the teams behind them.
