SPEARHEAD invites the public to explore the fascinating world of heliophysics and space weather at Researchers’ Night 2026, taking place on Friday, 25 September, at the National Observatory of Athens in Thiseio.
What happens when the Sun erupts? How do energetic particles travel through space, and what challenges does space radiation pose for satellites, astronauts and future missions to the Moon and Mars?
Visitors will have the opportunity to meet SPEARHEAD researchers and discover how scientists investigate Solar Energetic Particles (SEPs), Galactic Cosmic Rays (GCRs) and their effects on the space environment. Through conversations with the research team, they will learn why understanding these phenomena is important for space exploration and the study of space weather.
As part of the experience, visitors will also be able to watch a solar eruption through an immersive virtual reality (VR) video, offering a different perspective on the dynamic processes taking place on our nearest star.
Researchers’ Night provides an opportunity to bring scientific research closer to the public, encourage curiosity and inspire the next generation of scientists. SPEARHEAD looks forward to welcoming visitors of all ages, sharing its research and answering questions about the Sun, energetic particles and the space environment.
